The Victorian
flavor of this house calls for bright and glorious
colors to match the era it was built in. A small
swatch of original paint was found in the closet
and is the reason buttercup yellow color was
chosen for this room.
In the 1930s there
was a fire on the second floor of the Hersey
House. The story is that a roomer was smoking
in bed. The Buttercup Room and the hallway were
damaged in the fire. If you look closely at
the closet door you will see that it is a bit
melted at the top, but it was so solidly build
that it did not burn.
There used to
be a tower over the hall sitting room but that
too unfortunately burned. In restoration after
the fire the roof line was changed from its
original form. There is a picture of the house
when it was originally built hanging in the
downstairs foyer preserving it's history for
future generations.
The foundation
of the Hersey House is made of 22” thick
fieldstone providing excellent conditions for
storing preserves and root vegetables for the
long winter.
