The beautiful
Hersey Suite is where Samuel and Emily Hersey
resided after their marriage. Four Hersey sons
were born and the adjoining room became their
nursery. There was no central heat when the
home was first built, rather each room was heated
by a small stove. The lady of the house would
stand on the sitting room balconey adjoining
the master suite and watch over her household.
She could stay in her day dress, nurse her baby,
and talk to the trades people who came to the
front door to sell eggs, meat or other products
for the home.
The furniture in this room is made from Minnesota
Pine. The tops on the bureau and dressing table
are faux marble which could have been mined
from the St. Cloud area. The mirror over the
radiator was a wedding gift to my parents, Frank
and Frances Tauber who were married on June
21, 1932 in Douglas County, Minnesota. The white
and green lamp on the dressing table is now
converted to electricity and was owned by my
grandparents, Mary and Joe Schoenack who immigrated
to the United States from Germany in 1906.
The floors upstairs are all original to the
house. They are 4” pine boards, no doubt
cut right from the forests around the Snake
River in Mora. They have been painted numerous
times and you will see red, gray, white and
now cream.
